Biography:
Elizabethtown resident Kentucky is a hip-hop, rap and soul artist. Reignman prefers to emphasize the soul element to his music unlike typical hip-hop and rap subjects.
“It doesn’t have to be about drugs and guns and violence,” he said.
Still, Kentucky's music includes explicit language, and some of it, he said, is the “hardcore stuff.”
Recording under the name Kentucky Reignman, He uses beats provided by producers from around the globe, Italy and the United Kingdom, he said.
They supply the melody; Kentucky supplies the vocals.
Writing the lyrics, he said, involves him getting a feel for the melody first so the words will match. He doesn’t write lyrics without a tune, he said.
“I let the beat talk to me,” he said.
The process, Kentucky said, is like carrying on a conversation with the music.
“By the time it’s over, I have a song.”
Kentucky said the tone of much of his work is serious and somber because he likes to approach it that way.
“Music, to me, is therapy,” he said.
Because Kentucky comes from a “bad background,” , writing his music requires a balancing act of sorts in order to keep the music the right tone.
“My biggest challenge,” he said. “Is saying what I want to.”
Kentucky is a hip-hop and rap fan, but he listens to every genre of music, from classical to country. In fact, he’s found a parallel between the rap he records and his favorite genre of music.
“I listen to more country music than I should ” he said. “To me they’re the same thing.”
Country and rap music generally address the same types of subjects in different cultural settings, he said.
“After the family and everyone falls asleep, it’s my time,” he said, explaining he has spent up to 13 hours at a time working on his music.
When he began recording, Kentucky found himself making the kind of music he wanted to hear, he said.
As Kentucky Reignman, he recorded an album called “Past Due,” The album contains 16 tracks and has been downloaded more than 30,000 times,
Though he’s pleased with the response to his work, he’s happy creating his music strictly from home. To Kentucky, family time is important.
“I’m comfortable,” he said. “I’m not greedy.”
The recording artist continues to work on his music, too.
Kentucky Reignman is planning more recordings that will be a little different from his previous album.
“I’ve been working on my vocals a lot, Fans can expect less rapping and more singing on upcoming tracks, he said.
“In this business you follow your own road"
